Exporting and importing data

Our customers can export or import their data through the “Tools” menu at the top right corner of the screen.

Current browsers do not allow client-side file processing: standard upload/download operations work directly with the server. As ThreeTags’ server does not have access to unencrypted user data, this approach is not suitable in our case. We use either Gears API or a hidden Java applet to write exported data to and to read imported data from a hard drive.

So in order to be able to import and export your data, you need to have Google Gears or Sun Java installed and enabled in your browser.

Please note that you need Sun Java implementation, as alternative packages usually do not provide the needed functionality. For example, Apple’s Java implementation (the only one available on Mac) is limited and does not suit our purposes. So if you are using a Mac, please install Google Gears (available for Firefox and Safari) if you want to use import/export.

Please also note that the export file is unencrypted, so if you store confidential data in your ThreeTags account, treat the export file carefully (don’t send it as an email attachment, for example).

Several typical use cases

  • Password change: export all your data, empty the account, change your password, import your data back.
  • Share data between accounts: export some or all items from one account, import them into another.
  • Standard backup/restore routines.
