Frequently Asked Questions

Question: How do I print a note?

Answer: Select the note(s) you want to print and click “Export to HTML” button on the toolbar. Once you have the export page open, print it using your browser.

Question: I have Google Gears installed, but ThreeTags still says “Install Gears” in the online menu. What’s wrong?

Answer: Sometimes Internet Explorer disables Google Gears without asking the user. If this is the case, you should go to Tools -> Manage Add-ons, and make sure that all Google Gears addons (there can be two: Google Gears Factory and Google Gears Helper) are enabled.

Question: I am accessing my ThreeTags account from two different computers and I am automatically signed out on one computer when I sign in on another. This is inconvenient as the whole sign in process is a bit lengthy.

Answer: One-session-per-account is a feature that we implemented to strengthen the overall security of our service. A workaround would be to enable the offline mode on both computers and keep one “offline” while you are using the other. Then you just put it back “online”, and the client signs in for you automatically.

Question: Sometimes notes are sorted by name, and sometimes by date, with the sorting button disabled. What’s going on?

Answer: When you have less than 40 notes matching your tag selection, they are all downloaded into your browser, and then sorted by name. If you have more than 40 notes matching your tag selection, a paging mechanism is used, and only 40 latest notes are downloaded initially. As notes are encrypted on the server, there is no way for us to sort notes by name remotely.

To sort more than 40 notes by name, you can click “Download all notes” button (under the “Sign out” button in the top right corner) and then use “Sort by”. When the offline mode is enabled, page size is increased to 100 notes by page.

Question: If I forget my password, how can I recover it?

Answer: There is no password recovery option in ThreeTags, due to multiple security considerations. Please remember your passwords.

Question: I have a lot of notes in another notes application, and I want to migrate them to ThreeTags. How can I do that?

Answer: It is very easy if you can do some scripting/programming. Our import/export file format is simple and straightforward JSON, which is easy to figure out by studying sample export files.

Question: What happens if there is a synchronization conflict between the online notebook and the iPhone app?

Answer: There are several scenarios:

  • When a note is changed both on the iPhone and on the web, it will be duplicated.
  • If a note is deleted on the web but changed on the iPhone, the iPhone version will be preserved (iPhone wins).
  • If a note is deleted on the iPhone but changed on the web, it will be deleted (iPhone wins).
  • On the iPhone, if you change the online account you synchronize with, your local (iPhone) and your online notes will be merged.

Hi, I think your apps is great. Just two proposals for future updates:
    1. It would be great if the user could open and collapse all tags at once. In case you use hierarchical tags intensively, this might be very useful.
    2. It would be nice to improve the search function, in example to show a list of notes that match the search criteria.

Thank you for your great product and support.

  • Hi Juergen,

Thank you for your feedback! We will add expand/collapse buttons soon, thank you for your suggestion.

Search, however, is a bit trickier to implement because we cannot do it the standard way on the server, as all user data is encrypted. Search is definitely in our roadmap, but it is not something we can do quickly.

    Best regards,
    ThreeTags dev. team

let me know when global search is implemented – this is the key feature and i’m coming from a PIM called info select where search is king – otherwise it looks very similar. if you had a really good fast search engine it would make it a very valuable tool for personal information. can you store data locally and sync to the internet with encryption like evernote?

I think some kind of search would be a GREAT. I want to move all of my online notes to ThreeTags but for some of them I really need some way to search for the information I need.

Even a slow client side search would work for me (as long as it wasn’t too slow). Or just being able to search the name of the note or the tags would help. If you could search for something like “All notes with tag XXX AND tag YYY NOT tag ZZZ” that would really help too.

Hi, if I copy these lines from a text editor, say, Windows notebook, and paste to threetage notebook:

    line1
    line2
    line3

    they will become:
    line1line2line3line1line2line3

All the line breaks will simple disappear and the content will repeat twice.
The old version was working fine. The problem occurs in the new version.

    Any solution?

    Thanks.

  • Hi Tony,

This is a known bug in Google Chrome. We are looking into it.

Both Firefox and MSIE paste multi-line text properly, so you can use one of these browsers when you need to paste text from an external editor.

    Sorry, and best regards,
    ThreeTags Inc.

The application looks great…the only thing is really missing is a webclip, to easily import text and urls browsing the web.

Hi, great service, only one thing is missing and I know it’s not really a notebook thing, but a word count would be great. I often try to write for NaNo, but am always on different computers all the time. Threetags helps me a lot, but it would be nice if I could keep track of the word count on Threetags itself. Just my own opinion.
